Karlštejn Castle was founded in 1348 by the Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor as his private residence and a place of the royal treasure’s safekeeping, especially his collections of holy relics and the Imperial Crown Jewels. The construction was completed in 1365 when the Chapel of the Holy Cross in the Great Tower was consecrated.
The work on Karlštejn Castle was part of the Integrated Regional Operational Program (IROP) “Karlštejn Castle – the Jewel of Bohemia”, to create a new exhibition in the monument. The work was carried out in the Castle Burgraviate, in the basement of the Imperial Palace, the arcade annex, the old stable and in the rock cellar. All the work was carried out according to the principles of protection of historical elements in order not to damage the listed parts of the monument.
